Koilsagar Reservoir | Mahabubnagar Diaries

Updated: Sep 12, 2020

Constructed between two mountains on the Peddavagu River, the Koil Sagar Dam is one of the most preferred tourist attractions of Mahabubnagar District and attracts a lot of tourists from nearby districts specially Hyderabad. This reservoir is located in Koilsagar Village of the Deverakadra Mandal.

Distance (from Hyderabad): 146 kms

There are 3 options to reach Koilsagar Reservoir from Hyderabad -

Option A: Hyderabad > Jadcherla > Bhutpur > Mahabubnagar > Devarkadra > Koilsagar

Option B: Hyderabad > Moinabad > Shabad> Mahabubnagar > Devarkadra > Koilsagar

Option C: Hyderabad > Shankarpally > Metlakunta > Bandagonda > Koilsagar

Since I prefer to reach my destinations early when there is a lesser footfall, I chose Option A to reach the destination - it took me close to 3 hours to reach the destination which  included a fuel break and a few random stops to capture the beautiful village landscapes.

You are welcomed by a tall beautiful statute of Lord Hanuman just as you reach the place - it looks as if He is the Guardian of the place. I could also see some locals getting ready to catch some freshwater fish since the dam gates were opened just a few days back.

There was not much crowd around from outside except for the locals a few policemen - I later on realized that the road to the reservoir was closed by these policemen and I was lucky enough to reach the place before them. So in case you plan to visit this location, try to reach by 0800 hours so that your plans are not spoiled - the local authorities had to take such measures to reduce the inflow of tourists considering the rise in COVID cases across.

Just a few meters away from the reservoir there's a tiny patch of road that leads you to some awesome sights overlooking the dam and the reservoir. I decided to move on to check this out since in some time the policemen who had come there had started to ask the crowd that was slowly building up to move out.

I was greeted with some amazing sights and sounds that this place had to offer along with some more people who had come armed with grubs and fishing rods to try their luck; I took up my own place a little atop the rocks to sit down and treat myself to the panoramic view while enjoying my breakfast.

This place is also famous for camping trips - do check out before leaving with your tents as there could be restrictions for now. In case you want organized camping, you can also check out Freakouts - a Bangalore Based Adventure Company

Having spent close to an hour or so and recharging my soul with the beautiful sights and sounds, I decided to move on back to Hyderabad.

As usual, I would request everyone not to litter and leave every place better for our future generations to be also able to enjoy the beauty that these places have to offer.

Travel Tips: Carry your own food and water - and ensure to carry a garbage bag to ensure that you do not leave the waste and litter behind.
